How to build a great fire

  1. Always leave some ash in the fireplace since it creates heat that reflects back into the fire. Some folks clean out these ashes after every fire. Don't be so tidy, it works against a great fire.

  2. Place an average size log on the back of the grate with three pieces of fatwood (or other fire-starter) along side.

 3.   Place another average size log in front making sure to leave plenty of air space between the two logs...at least a finger's breadth. Now create an "H" pattern of logs. If your fireplace has enough head space add an extra one across the top which will help reflect the heat back into the fire to get it going and keep it going.

4.  A couple of crumpled pieces of newspapers underneath and you'll be ready to go. Simply light the paper. The rest should take care of itself. The fatwood will catch and give you enough blaze to get the whole fire going.

5.  Your fire should burn for quite some time...45 minutes or more depending on your fire-place...before you'll need to throw another log on.
